Metaverse – The New Virtual Universe
Metaverse is one of the most talked about internet topics nowadays that you might have already heard or read about. The metaverse is a virtual world that surrounds an immersive network of interconnected virtual environments. It allows users to engage with each other and digital objects in real-time.
This is indeed the next evolution of the internet, enabling people to interact with a virtual environment, combining elements of augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and the internet of things (IoT). The metaverse has the potential to revolutionize the way we work, learn, socialize, and conduct business, creating new opportunities for innovation and growth across multiple industries.
What is Meta?
In the context of Facebook, "Meta" refers to the rebranding of the company that was announced on October 28, 2021. Facebook, the social media platform, is now just one of the products under the Meta brand. This also includes VR and AR products.
The name change to Meta reflects the company's broader ambitions beyond social media and its focus on building the metaverse, a shared virtual space that allows people to interact in a three-dimensional environment.
Moreover, the rebranding of the company to Meta does not affect the use or functionality of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, or any of the other products that fall under the Meta umbrella. These platforms will continue to operate as usual.
How do they make Metaverse?
The concept of the metaverse is still in its early stages, and there is no approach to creating it.
Roblox is supporting user-generated video games. Meta is developing a VR social platform. Apart from that some businesses are providing little more than broken gaming worlds with NFTs tacked on.
The followings are a short list of technologies that are going to be present in the metaverse.
- VR and AR – These technologies allow users to enter and interact with digital worlds more naturally.
- Blockchain and NFTs – Build a safe, decentralized infrastructure for the metaverse using blockchain technology. Unique digital assets that may be purchased, sold, and traded within the metaverse can be made using Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs).
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) – AI will be used to make Intelligent avatars, virtual assistants, and other digital characters that can communicate with people in the metaverse.
- Interoperability – Meta will use standards and protocols for interoperability to ensure that users can freely switch between various virtual worlds and apps within the metaverse.
Furthermore, building the metaverse will require collaboration between multiple industries and disciplines, including technology, design, gaming, entertainment, and more.
